Why are there so many elephants at Borbjerg Mølle Kro? (Borbjerg Mill Inn)
We get asked this question many times during the course of a day.  You don’t have to be staying at the “Kro” for very long before you notice that there are elephants of all shapes and sizes to be found both inside and outside the buildings.  Our guests first get acquainted with the elephants when they receive their room key.  The key ring is a solid metal elephant.

The reason for all the elephants is a mixture of proprietor Esther Jensen’s collectors bent, her penchant for lucky-charms, and a love-affair with Africa.  The more than 1200 elephants, which help to create a positive and friendly atmosphere, have been bought on her travels to various parts of the world.  The collection was started about 20 years ago, with the majority of acquisitions being made in Africa over the last 10 years.

Since February 1997 Esther has visited Swaziland in southern Africa 12 times.  Here she has many friends big and small who are involved with the SOS –Childrens Village project.  She herself sponsers 4 children with whom she holds contact via letter and regular visits.  These visits give Esther the chance go on safari and of course see a great many real elephants.  There have also been many trips to the markets where local craftsmen carve out elephant figures for sale.  Many of the large heavy figures around the Kro have been bought there and later shipped home by container to Borbjerg.

Our collection often gets supplemented with new exhibits as many guests donate new figures to us.  Here at Borbjerg Mølle Kro there will always be a shelf or cupboard with space for a new elephant to grace our rooms.  In this way there is always something new and exciting to experience here at the old kro.
